Savusavu
The nearby town of Savusavu is a relaxed harbor town on the island of Vanua Levu and is often described as Fiji’s hidden paradise. It’s known for its natural beauty, geothermal activity, and authentic local atmosphere. The town is just over a kilometre away – 25 minutes walk or 4 minutes in a taxi. With a bustling market and a range of restaurants, it’s an easy place to meet the locals and enjoy at leisure. And there are a couple of other nearby spots you should know about too.
Market : the Savusavu Market provides a colorful look into everyday Fijian life, with stalls selling tropical fruits, fresh seafood, vegetables, and yaqona (kava).
Harbourside walk: there’s a concrete path along the edge of the harbour, running from the Savusavu Tourism Association Park to the edge of the new (still unopened) supermarket. Shaded in parts, it gives views across the harbour to the yachts and to Nawi Island Marina.
The Savusavu Hot Springs: bubbling geothermal vents release steam right near the shoreline. Locals traditionally use the hot ground to cook root crops, and visitors can walk among the steaming pools and mud areas to experience this unique natural phenomenon.
Planters Club: a bit of history of the old copra industry can be found in this charming old club – and it has an excellent restaurant at very good prices. It’s an easy one kilometre walk from Daku Resort.
Flora Tropica Gardens: a peaceful botanical garden featuring rare palms and tropical plants, situated four kilometres up the road. Get our staff to call ahead to make a booking.
KokoMana Chocolate Farm and Factory: situated just around the back of Daku Resort, KokoMana offers a unique ‘tree to bar’ tour. It works its chocolate magic among giant rain trees in a peaceful forested valley. The guides point out the various Pacific crops and trees, as well as explaining how the system works, for a healthier environment and to provide livelihoods for smallholder farmers, as well as producing fine-flavour chocolate. And of course, if you like the product, you can buy bars of chocolate to take home as presents or just to indulge yourself!
JHunter Pearls: pearl farm tours offer insight into Fiji’s black pearl industry.
Urata Lookout cafe: enjoy a cup of coffee and a slice of cake at this community-run cafe with its exceptional view of Savusavu Bay. Its innovative architecture won an award for the designers, CAUKIN studio. 20 minutes’ drive out of town
Restaurants – lots to choose from but don’t miss a sunset cocktail at the Yacht Club.
